For a quality or safety manager, a curtain side trailer is not just a loading platform with flexible access. It is part of the load containment system, and that changes the buying decision. EN 12642 is the European standard that deals with body structure strength on commercial vehicles. In practice, it affects whether the trailer body can contribute to keeping cargo stable during transport, and under what conditions.

That point is often missed. A trailer may look suitable because it has curtains, roof rails, buckle systems, and a solid chassis, but appearance does not tell you whether the body has been designed and built to a recognized strength level. If your transport plan assumes the trailer sides help restrain the load, then the body specification and supporting documents become part of compliance, not just procurement paperwork.

Does EN 12642 mean the curtains alone can secure the cargo?

No. That is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes.

A curtain side trailer is not automatically a self-securing solution. Even where a body is built to EN 12642 requirements, the curtains are only one part of the overall restraint system. The load type, packing pattern, pallet stability, friction, blocking, and lashing arrangement still matter. If the cargo can move internally, lean, or settle, the trailer body cannot compensate for poor load preparation.

For QC teams, the practical rule is simple: never assume “curtain-sided” means “load-secured.” Ask what the body is rated to do, then match that against the actual cargo behavior.

What should you check in the specification before approving a trailer?

Start with documents, not marketing language. The minimum check should cover:

They shift the focus from payload alone to predictable cargo behavior under braking, cornering, and evasive movement. A curtain side trailer that works well for stable, uniformly packed palletized goods may be the wrong choice for machinery, steel products, uneven unit loads, or cargo with a high center of gravity.

When evaluating a trailer, check whether the operating profile includes:

  • Frequent cross-border transport with formal roadside inspections
  • Mixed cargo that changes weight distribution from trip to trip
  • Loads that cannot be tightly blocked against the headboard or side structure

In those cases, trailer selection should involve the safety team, not just fleet purchasing. You are choosing a restraint platform, not only a transport unit.

Is a stronger trailer body enough if the cargo is irregular or heavy?

Usually not. Body strength helps, but irregular cargo creates a different restraint problem. Engineering machinery, fabricated steel items, and dense equipment often require direct lashing, blocking, or dedicated transport configurations. The trailer must have suitable securing points in the right locations, and the deck arrangement must allow the securing plan to be applied correctly.

Choose the curtain side trailer only after you have matched three things: the body strength documents, the real cargo behavior, and the securing method your operation can execute consistently. If one of those three depends on guesswork, the trailer is not yet properly selected.

That approach is slower at purchase stage, but it prevents the more expensive outcome: a compliant-looking trailer being used in a way its structure was never meant to support.
